Marine Paintings
Kate Richardson
I grew up in a sailing family living on the River Hamble, near the Solent.
I grew up in a lovely outdoor lifestyle with my brother and sister and enjoyed sailing with my parents. My Father owned and still sails six metre racing yachts, so through the years I have seen many of these boats racing and sailing together in all types of weather. I am married to Craig Nutter who has done two America’s Cup campaigns and a Volvo Round the World race. Together we live in Cowes on the Isle of Wight, with our two children, Jack and Molly. There are views of the sea from our home and we have a delightful Classic Cruising boat that we enjoy and sail together around the Solent and beyond.
I have the ability to use paint and ink to show the energy and movement of many things. My formal training was at the City & Guilds of London Art School and as my style has progressed while I was in New Zealand for the America’s Cup , I am now really enjoying expressing myself with the yachts and scenery. I enjoy the effect of using lovely bright colours which, if you look hard enough, can be seen all around us. The images are established using a firm line and the colours are applied to the canvas onto a bold textured surface to gain a richness of depth and this combination expresses energy, movement and , an enjoyable visual experience. The painting is more gratifying for me when I can do the larger canvases, but the smaller ones are satisfying and equally challenging.
I have been able to create a variety of work from my studio in Cowes.
